Wilkes County Moves Next Property Reappraisal to 2028

Wilkes County commissioners have approved a three-year property reappraisal cycle, moving the next countywide revaluation from 2029 to 2028. Future reappraisals are scheduled for 2031, 2034 and every three years afterward, provided the schedule receives no objection from the North Carolina Department of Revenue.

Why the county changed the schedule

During the October 6 meeting, county officials said the 2019 and 2025 reappraisals each followed six-year gaps. Officials argued that long intervals can create larger jumps in assessed values because market changes accumulate for years before being reflected in tax records. A shorter cycle is intended to keep assessed values more closely aligned with market conditions and reduce the size of abrupt valuation changes.

The commissioners unanimously approved the schedule change, a Tyler Technologies reappraisal contract and a $1,292,950 Tax Department budget amendment. The funding covers tax software, implementation, scanning, street-level photographs, Nearmap imagery and work connected with the 2028 reappraisal.

What a reappraisal does—and does not do

A reappraisal updates the assessed value of real property for tax purposes. It does not by itself determine the final tax bill. The amount owed depends on both the assessed value and the tax rate adopted for the applicable budget year.

Property owners should keep records of significant property changes and watch for future county notices explaining inspection, valuation and appeal procedures. No new 2028 values have been issued.
