Wilkes County Begins Work on Broader RV and Camping Rules
Wilkes County commissioners have unanimously directed county staff to develop more comprehensive regulations for recreational-vehicle parks and temporary camping.
The action does not adopt a final ordinance. It authorizes staff to prepare either a stand-alone RV and camping ordinance or amendments to the existing RV Park and Mobile Home Park Ordinance.
Issues expected to be addressed
Meeting discussion identified sanitation, restroom and shower access, water, utilities, supervision, security, transportation and public health as concerns. Officials said any resulting ordinance must apply countywide rather than target a particular property or population.
The Planning Board had unanimously recommended that commissioners authorize development of broader rules. County staff and the Planning Board will now work on proposed language before any final adoption process.
What property owners should know
Property owners considering an RV park, campground or organized temporary-camping use should not assume that the current rules will remain unchanged. At the same time, no one should describe proposed requirements as law until the county publishes the ordinance text and completes the required approval process.
Important unanswered questions include parcel standards, utility and sanitation requirements, security responsibilities, permit procedures, grandfathering and the effective date.
